Relationship with Family:
Francis had a delightful childhood, he had the run of the house and everyone wrapped around his little finger before he could walk. He was a precocious and charming child and has never really changed from that. he and his mother Fayette were practically inseparable. He was highly imaginative and a silly kid, much to the delight of all. He loved it the most when his mother would enhance his outrageous stories with illusions or bring inanimate items to life around the House. It didn't take him long to catch on and start doing it himself, much to the surprise and delight of his parents. They were careful to teach him to not do it in the public and restrict it to the home.
His older twin sisters, Frieda and Frayda loved to spoil him and dote on him. They also loved to play with his long hair and put it up in bows and ribbons as well as dress him up in their old dresses. He was a rather congenial and easy going kid so he never fought it, and would play whatever they wanted to play as long as they'd let him do want he wanted later on.
His father Frederic was a much more reserved parent but sill made sure to spend time with him when he got older. He would take the time to patiently teach Francis all about the outdoors and everything in the world around him. Francis loved learning about the outdoors and would take a journal to record everything in multiple sketch books. When Francis had questions about something he would always go first to his father, as he saw him as a fountain of knowledge.
Evenings were spent as a family around the fireplace playing guessing games, or sharing stories. Often they would have story competitions, the most elaborate and imaginative would win a special prize. This encouraged Francis to write and create his own stories and to use his imagination.
During the Summer when Frederic could get off of work as an auditor for a large lawyer's firm they would go on vacations all over Europe. Most of their vacations consisted of educational stops; as the Caffrey parents believed in always encouraging learning in their kids.
History:
Born in Essex, London on a rainy dreary day, Francis brought sunshine and happiness to Sarah and Frederic Caffrey. They were very protective of Francis, due to their first son Fingal dying at a young age. Like his deceased brother Francis has asthma and extreme allergies to pollen, nuts and dogs.
To prevent any bad experiences with his allergies his parents kept him home where they could keep a close eye on him and taught him up until first grade. Not knowing what school would be like, Francis finally convinced his parents (with his sisters’ help) to let him go to one. They sent him to a private school where the teachers and staff could better handle any problems he might have.
He hated every moment he was in the school, though he didn’t say anything for the longest of times. He was bullied terribly and had a rough time of it at the private school with sports being extremely emphasized. He had a few close calls with his asthma, much to his frustration; apparently when he got worked up about how he was treated it would trigger his asthma terribly.
Not wanting to be labeled a snitch, he bore it without a word for several years. Finally his twin sisters discovered what was going on one day when they came to pick him up from school and caught three kids picking on him. Without thinking they turned the three boys into toads to teach them a lesson. It was with much trepidation that the three Caffrey kids discovered that the headmaster of Francis’ school was actually a wizard and had seen what had happened. He took the spell off his students and erased the incident from their minds.
Francis’ sisters could have been expelled from Hogwarts for using their magic in the Muggle world, but were spared this fate when the Headmaster defended them. While their use of magic was wrong, they were defending their younger brother who was being tormented. The whole ordeal was an eye opener for Francis and his sisters. They have all been careful not to let their tempers get the better of them.
Francis has always been exposed to magic and has even been allowed to practice simple spells under his parent’s watchful eyes. After the incident at his school, they pulled him out and started teaching him at home again, much to his relief. He rather liked learning about the magicking world and what was going on in it. He can hardly wait until he can join his sisters at Hogwarts.
He’s completely psyched and overjoyed when on his 11th birthday he receives his acceptance letter to Hogwarts. The only drawback is he has to wait for 10 months before he can actually go! It’s the only time he’s regretted having an October birthday. He’s waiting as patiently as he can, and pouring over his sisters’ old magic books to prep himself for his first year at school.
The Sorting:
Francis wrapped his arms around himself and shuddered, the ringing sounds of laughter and chattering voices was too much. Why did there have to be soo many people present during the sorting? Why couldn’t they make it a private deal? It’s not like they needed to see the person get the hat stuck on their head. With how loud the hat yelled they would have still heard it even if the whole thing was done inside a steel vault at Gringotts. Only one more person to go and it would be his turn.
Francis was getting a bit apprehensive about what was coming up. He hated when people looked at him, and in a few seconds a sea of faces would be turned his way. He rather hoped that it would go by quickly..and not be as drawn out as the last person’s was.
“Caffrey, Francis” Called out the teacher with the list. Francis turned bright red and stumbled up the steps shaking slightly. Gods..why did there have to be so many of them?
He turned around so he was facing the crowd and dipped his eyes low so he wouldn’t have to look out on the rancous kids hooting and calling at him. He could almost hear it now. “Francis? That’s a girl’s name!” He gritted his teeth and clenched his fists. Didn’t they know that Francis had been a guy’s name long before it was used for a woman? Diwits. They knew next to nothing about names..or what they meant.
“Hmm..” Came a voice in his ear, which rather startled him. “Well then where should I place you? You’re something of a mystery.”
“Just put me some place I’ll be left alone and not bullied.” Francis replied softly.
“Hmm…well now that won’t do. You’re something of a dreamer..and a challenge. I know..Gryffindor would fit you perfectly! Though..you’re not much of a sporting type. Still it would do you some good to be in that House. You have courage and you’re the protective type so it works out rather well.”
Francis stood there numb as the Hat yelled out loudly, “Gryffindor!” He was startled to hear cheering from the Gryffindor table as he slowly walked over. They were actually happy to get him? Seriously? Didn’t they know he sucked at games? That he couldn’t even be outside during the spring or summer because of his asthma? Francis completely forgot about all his limitations when he was greeted cheerily by the entire table and thumped on the back enthusiastically by a seat mate.
“We got a Caffrey! Yes!”
Oh right. He had forgotten that his twin sisters were notorious at Hogwarts. That they excelled at everything. That explained it all. Francis groaned and laid his head down on the table. The darn hat had gotten it completely wrong. Drat.
Boggart: Seeing himself during an extremely bad asthma attack that can’t be stopped. Or his youngest sister actually being a squib and getting picked on..like he fears she might be.
Mirror of Erised: If he were to look into the mirror he would see himself as a healthy and adventuring wizard traveling the world and seeking out new and wondrous magical creatures.
Patronus: Not sure yet, possibly a dolphin or a frog of some sort.
Greatest Treasure: His Familiar Horace the Frog. It was given to him by his family on his 11th birthday. Francis stared at the box that was thumping around on the living room floor and then looked up at the expectant faces of his sisters and his parents. He finally reached for it and pulled the brightly papered box into his lap and untied the bright green bow. He slowly slid the lid up to peek inside. For a moment he sat their blinking, not sure what the big eyed creature staring back at him was. Then it hit him. It was a frog! Or was it a toad? He reached in and pulled it out. The smooth soft reptilian skin felt amazing..and he slowly pet the frog across it’s back.
The frog ribbited and glanced up at him with strangely intelligent eyes. Francis smiled and laid the frog back in the box. “Thanks Mum and Dad.” He said shooting them a grateful smile. He knew that any type of furred familiar would have caused him to break out in hives..and that wouldn’t have been fun to experience on his birthday so a frog was a nice surprise.
“You should thank your sisters as well. They helped us pick him out.” His mother replied with a smile.
“Are you going to name him?” Asked his youngest sister Fiona eagerly.
Francis glanced over at her. “Of course I am! I just have to think it over for awhile.”
Frieda and Frayda his older twin sisters laughed. “Yeah, you know Francis. He’s the thoughtful one, remember?” They asked in unison.
“Conscientious is more like it.” He replied, and glanced around at the other packages on the floor in the front room. “Is there an aquarium for him? He can’t live in the box for more than a day at most.”
“Well blast, I knew we forgot something!”
